I Remember When

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
Immigration for a long time has been an integral part of being Polish. Most Poles come into contact with it at some point in their lives, whether it be themselves or indirectly through friends and family. As an immigrant illustrator with Brexit looming over my head, I felt it important and necessary to acknowledge and unpack the ways in which moving to the UK had shaped me as a person.

How was the illustration used:
Graduate Show

How did you make this work:
The personal nature that this brief took on, meant that it was more about exploring and navigating the feelings that I had about the subject rather than answering any set questions. The sometimes sombre aspects of the painting are hidden behind the decorative elements as a way of not exposing and putting everything in plain sight.

Biography:
I am a Polish born illustrator based in the UK, I work primarily in gouache and occasionally explore the intricacies of paper cutting. My projects draw influence from Polish folklore and my position as an immigrant in Brexit Britain. My paintings often explore serious subjects vailed by a sea of beautifully coloured plants and geometric structures.
