Melissa Castrillon
Philip Pullman's HIS DARK MATERIALS

Book Covers

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The brief was given by Scholastic to produce new gift editions for HIS DARK MATERIALS, which was to incorporate foiling for added impact. I decide that the colour palette would have to be limited otherwise the covers would look too busy. It was a dream project and it was important for to keep that sense of nostalgia so i kept the original colours from the first editions, blues, greens & reds.

How was the illustration used:
These are illustrated paper back covers with fold out flaps and they were used as the covers for HIS DARK MATERIALS gift editions to sell from December 2019 All over the UK in conjunction with the new BBC adaptation.

How did you make this work:
Each cover has a limited palette of 3 colours plus 2 foiled layers. Each layer started life as a B&W pencil layer which i hand drew onto paper using a light box. I made the artwork like i would a screen print, except the last colour stage is digitally created on PS from the B&W pencil layers which i then scan, clean up, digitally colour and composite together to make the final image.
