Maria Kim
Still Life with Rice

Book Covers

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This piece is one of 5 reimagined covers I created for my undergraduate capstone project for books telling the stories of ethnic Koreans that I read to gain a deeper understanding of what might be called "the pain of the Korean." This is for Still Life with Rice by Helie Lee, a memoir about her grandmother who ran a restaurant, smuggled opium, and survived the Japanese Occupation and Korean War.

How was the illustration used:
This is one of five mock book covers created for my undergraduate capstone project.

How did you make this work:
I started out the piece on my iPad using Procreate up to the line work and then colored it in Photoshop. I used reference as needed, including internet research for historical accuracy and self-photographed modeling of myself and family.
