Mara Ivan-Mohor
"Lights Out" Music Video Animation

Exploration

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
For my graduation project, I collaborated with the Romanian artist Village to create a music video animation for his song, “Lights Out”. The song is contemplative, the absence of lyrics leaving it open to interpretation. This challenged me to imaginatively reconstruct it through a visual narrative likely to tell a meaningful story across the fields of illustration, animation and electronic music.

How was the illustration used:
It was used as part of my dissertation and as the song’s official release video. The brief was chosen by myself and approved by my tutors and the music artist. It was a non-paid collaboration.

How did you make this work:
The project was done digitally, using Procreate, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects software. I first created a storyboard and then proceeded on animating the frames accordingly. The objects and character animations were created on Procreate with the “frame-by-frame” technique, while the further edits, effects and, finally, full montage, were put together using After Effects.
