Night and Day

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
Night & Day is a visual representation of the history of Manchester Northern Quarter bar & music venue ‘Night and Day’. The publication documents the personal experiences & memories of the owner & promoter of the venue, Jan Oldenburg & Jay Taylor. The publication was a self initiated project & exhibited back in the venue. The venue began as a Fish & Chip shop, but Jan had the vision for much more

How was the illustration used:
Publication

How did you make this work:
From jazz bands performing, sometimes the sounds of the bands would be drowned out by the bubbling of the chip fryers. To now the prestigious, electric, eclectic music venue, thats had the likes of Black Keys, Kasabian & Elbow through its doors. The publication is printed on GF-Smith Beer Paper, & illustrated by paper cut collage, with sections of the interviews overlaying the images on trace.

Biography:
During the last two years my practice has focused on illustrating, documenting & collating stories of independent venues: the people, places, histories, & their narratives. My illustrations are predominately constructed from cutting up & shaping tiny bits of paper - letting characters and objects evolve from this process. Essentially drawing with scissors - I find this results in more unexpected & intriguing outcomes & compositions. I’m currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant on the Illustration with Animation course at Manchester School of Art. Alongside teaching, I am a resident at ‘Marketplace Studios’, Stockport - where I work as a freelance illustrator.
