Lola Grainger
Imillaskate

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
Lola’s set of books were created for a university project, based on real-world topics of human interest. Lola focused on Imillaskate, a group of young Bolivian women who skateboard in traditional pollera dresses, associated with the indigenous women of the highland regions, as a symbol of resistance.

What materials and techniques did you use?:
Lola created the books by drawing in pencil, before adding text in Photoshop. The pages were printed in two colours, using a Risograph machine, on yellow paper. Lola used a sewing machine to make unique fabric covers and bind the books; inspired by the importance of the traditional clothing worn by the skaters. Each book was then signed and titled by hand, and finished with a printed paper band.

How were your illustrations used:
The books were displayed at Sheffield Hallam University's conference, 'Origin Stories' (a celebration of the cultural impact of comics as narrative beginnings). The book also forms part of Lola's graduating portfolio.
