Why did you make this work:
Fungarium is a book to inspire readers of all ages with the world of fungi. Creating a visually exciting cover was a key part of this, to showcase the diversity of colour and shape within the fungi kingdom.

How was the illustration used:
The illustration was made for the book cover of the trade edition. The Welcome to the Museum series has been running under the Big Picture Press (part of Bonnier Books UK) imprint for almost 10 years. This is the third title in the series that Katie has illustrated, and we love seeing how she interprets the brief each time.

How did you make this work:
Katie started the project by spending time in the Kew fungarium and library, working closely with the mycology department there. All the artwork was created from her studio, where she draws all her illustrations by hand, and then colours on photoshop.

Biography:
Katie Scott graduated from University of Brighton in 2011. Her work draws influences from traditional medical and botanical illustration, both in aesthetic and subject matter. Her work plays with the ideas of scientific uncertainty and speculation, fabricating the inner and outer workings of the world. Her illustrations depict a familiar yet fantasy vision of plants, humans and minerals.
