Amal - Chidren's book for children with PTSD

Children's Publishing

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I was asked by Jabal Publishing to be part of the team working on a series of 9 books to help children with PTSD learn coping mechanisms and learn more about their condition. I am the illustrator of the book, and I work closely with the writer and psychologist as part of the team. The books follow the story of the protagonist (a child with PTSD) as he heals and becomes better.

How was the illustration used:
These illustrations are from the first book of the series, which is curreently being piloted with 100 refugee kids in Jordan.

How did you make this work:
I decided to use an expressive and full of textures coloring technique to represent the subject matter. Pencil mixed with a bit of felt pen allows for creating harsh textures at times, and smoother ones at other times as the inner state of the protagonist fluctuates. I chose to start the books with 2 colors & to increase the colors throughout the books as the protagonist starts coping better.
