Google on the Brain

Why did you make this work:
I was invited by Fast Company magazine to illustrate their article about Google's AI technology. They asked me to represent AI as a giant robot and I came up with a set of illustrations that carried the reader through the story, from the robot's conception to its interaction with the public.

How was the illustration used:
A double page spread opener (image 1), a full page (image 2) and a half page (image 3) illustrations.

How did you make this work:
Their basic initial input was that they wanted the AI to be represented by a giant robot and for the illustrations to be ambiguous about their mood. So I tried to imagine what a Google-made robot would look like, and played with the mood of the scenes to add that contrast of "This is awesome/kinda terrifying". My final images are a mix of Illustrator and Photoshop.

Biography:
My name is Gabriel Silveira, I'm a Brazilian freelance illustrator living in London. I've been an illustrator since 2006, working with editorial illustration, advertising, animation and branding. In my work I always try to think critically about my design decisions and constantly improve on my skills and creative approach to briefs. I like to say my work sits in between art and graphic design. I'm always looking for strong, graphic, stylized solutions for designs, while at the same time thinking about classic illustration concepts for gesture and compositions. I love drawing scenes with characters, and convey their stories and feelings through their actions and poses.
