Doug John Miller
The Bao Trio

Commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
Beginning with the reference of Night Hawks by Edward Hopper I was asked to illustrate the Bao restaurants and pop ups at night for advertising and prints. The brief was for moody and atmospheric images with little details scattered throughout. A focus was to be the appearance of the frontages and glowing, warm interiors filled with business workers wearing suits.

How was the illustration used:
Prints (yet to be screen printed), posters, menus and social media adverts

How did you make this work:
The project evolved from a single image to a series after the success of the first showing Bao Fitzrovia. As such each has a slightly different feel as I got to grips with the style, experimenting with such a dark composition for the first time made for interesting highlights and textures. This series has influenced my recent personal work in getting to grips with atmosphere and moody lighting.
