Why did you make this work:
I wrote SAIL in a moment of inspiration and it was later taken on by Hachette (Little, Brown books for young readers). It came out during the pandemic and in a way timing couldn't have been better as so many kids were going through challenging times. SAIL is about how much we can learn and grow from these (and other) challenges.

How was the illustration used:
A picture book for 4-8 year olds as well as the graduation market.

How did you make this work:
I used predominantly water colour and ink combined with printmaking techniques such as monoprint. I also used Photoshop for some digital compilation.

Biography:
Dorien grew up in the Netherlands and moved to the UK where she worked as a designer with clients like the Prado Museum & Tate Modern to Pearson Publishing. Her debut was ‘The Remarkable Pigeon’. Hachette acquired her 2 latest picture books and she is currently illustrating a new book for Penguin. ‘Sail’ was shortlisted for the illustrators exhibition at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.
