Dominic Bodden
Portraits of Westlake

Exploration

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This series of illustrations investigates the impact of gentrification on the neighborhood of Westlake, Los Angeles, and the ways local families and businesses are adapting to the many changes in the community. Emphasis is placed on the ways tradition and innovation intersect when people are trying to survive.

How was the illustration used:
This is a personal project made with the intent of submitting to Illustration annuals and use in my graduating portfolio.

How did you make this work:
This project is all about limitless layers! I used chalk pastel, paper collage, and photo transfer printmaking to create compositions that are layered with design and storytelling. I focused on shape language and contrasted detailed rendered form against simplified flat shape. The pastel portions are composed on sandpaper to reflect the texture and grit of the community.
