Angela Vives
Tales of Terrific Tigers

Children's Publishing

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
I wanted to illustrate an existing text as part of my masters in children's book illustration. Fascinated by the playful and violent nature of tigers, I searched for stories that featured these fantastic creatures. I sifted through many examples in children and adult literature, searching for stories that show the predator instead of the tamed domesticated striped feline.

How was the illustration used:
Work in progress - The illustrations are for a children's picture book poetry collection. I look forward to developing this exciting concept, collaborating in a creative team to introduce more texts from around the world, to create an accessible, thrilling book for children everywhere.

How did you make this work:
I used brushstrokes of gouache and emulsion on paper. Then made a collage, placing characters onto backgrounds, experimenting with composition. I delight in my messy workspace, lots of tiny little pieces of paper and paint splatters – more mess, better image! I like to play with the materials, feel the pigments, so only work digitally on the final stages for colour correcting and adding text.

Biography:
Living by the sea in Colombia, Angela was passionate about nature, always making and drawing. Following her studies in Fine Arts, Angela became a video editor in London. After 15 years of editing commercials for major advertising agencies and crafting stories in film, she joined the prestigious MA in Children's book illustration at the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, to seek out new ways of telling stories, return to image-making and share her passion for children's literature. She uses colour pencils and gouache to make painterly strokes on paper which she then collages. Inspired by nature, her childhood memories and the magic in folk art, Angela is constantly captivated by the deceptive simplicity of the art in children's picture books. In 2018, she was shortlisted for the Cheltenham Illustration Award.
