Preferred Pronoun?
She/her/they
Why did you choose to enter this work?
I feel that this is the best art I've ever produced. Art that is thought-provoking is essential. Here I'm reframing depression as a monster but one that should be cared for and accepted.
What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I've been drawing Isolation Monster for a while – since lockdown – but with this project I've contextualised my monster. I really believe in my concept and enjoyed creating the limited colour palettes
What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Feeling worthwhile. Feeling seen. It's hard being an illustrator and really dedicating your life to art, as you all know. It has fuelled my ambition to just keep going and creating.
Where do you usually work?
I do have a desk and a Mac, but with my severe pain and mobility issues I don't spend much time there. I often have to create on my pad (in Procreate) on my bed. It's not fancy but I get the job done!
How long did it take to complete your project?
3-4 months. I began the project in January and submitted as much as I could by the submission date. I continued with the project after!
What is your dream commission?
To do more books and pieces based upon mental health. I'd also love to create happy monsters for craft beer packaging! (Like my Wylde Moon pump clip - see my instagram!)
What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Monsters! I love drawing animals, people, plants, buildings too... but monsters are my favourite!
What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Always Be Curious: the ABC of illustration. Focus on your own art and try not to compare yourself to others.
What are your plans for the future?
I'm hoping to persuade an agent to take me on for some editorial work, but I'm not betting on it. I'll be managing my shop as usual (Zsuzsaillustration) and working on new projects!
