2024 | Longlist + Shortlist | Animation

Why did you choose to enter this work?
I think we’ve quite managed to combine a serious topic with a lighthearted visual based humour, handmade design and animation having a human touch. The raw simplicity looked bold in print as well.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
I’m into exploring the potential of handmade animation, through the texture and meaning of the movement, creating a specific mood. Here it was a joy of the movement itself.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
Seeing handmade illustrations and animations still appreciated for their qualities, their imperfections. A lifeline to where we come from is important. Especially now, when AI is trying to be around.

Where do you usually work?
I’m working in my studio, a quiet place where I can run my mind free. I like to have enough space.

What is your dream commission?
There are always things I’d like to do. Though many times the most rewarding projects might come from unexpected places.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
Recently it’s birds and circles. I like to work with and research a variety of things, ideas and stories, understanding the world better, getting closer to life, hopefully. And making it visual.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Don’t loose your ‘why’. I think developing your work or style isn’t only about the looks but about values and ideas, the what, why and how. Explore. Different process gives different results.

What are your plans for the future?
Keep making things, working with good people. And books. I’m working on a book when between projects, it takes time.
