Northern Illustration Prize 2023 – ‘The Sea’
The international prize for emerging and established illustrators returns for its third run.

Open for entries from 12 May 2023 (closing Sunday 11 June 2023).

The Northern Illustration Prize is one part of The Northern Festival of Illustration, a biennial celebration of all that is great about the diverse world of illustration.

In 2019 and 2021 The Prize attracted hundreds of entries from 6 continents.

The School and the Festival are based in the historic port town of Hartlepool on the north east coast of England.  This summer the town hosts the world-famous Tall Ships Race and to celebrate this and the town’s maritime heritage the theme of the Prize this year is ‘The Sea’.

Illustrators are free to interpret this theme how they choose but they might like to consider:

  • How the sea links us
  • How the sea has helped to form our history and present – forming us.
  • The Tall Ships race

The Prize invites entries from:

  • Emerging illustrators in the first five years of their career
  • Established illustrators more than five years into their career

Shortlisted entries will be exhibited as part of The Northern Festival of Illustration which will take place across July, August and September.  Shortlisted artists will be notified in early July, the two winners will be selected by public acclaim and notified towards the end of September.

The Northern Illustration Prize is the creation of The Northern School of Art and is a collaboration with The Association of Illustrators.

The Northern Festival of Illustration was founded in 2015 by The Northern School of Art as a major showcase for the talent of illustrators across print, digital, product design and many other fields – aiming to open eyes to the rewarding and diverse careers open to young people. It is supported by Arts Council England with National Lottery funds.
