Thomas Phillips is an illustrator living and working in Shropshire, UK. Having developed a love of drawing as a youngster fuelled by Beano comics and episodes of SMart he honed his skills at the University of Derby when completing a degree in Visual Communication Illustration.
He is a small chap, but a big advocate of taking the time to thoroughly understand the clients’ needs before undertaking commissioned work, which he tackles with his bold, conceptual approach to illustration.
Once the research stage of a project is completed ideas are visualised in the form of thumbnail sketches on all manner of surfaces to assess their potential. Those with promise are sketched in a more polished manner before being worked-up digitally where they are further refined until they efficiently convey the message to the viewer.
This approach has seen Thomas work with a number of UK-based editorial clients including The Financial Times, The Independent, Think Publishing and Redactive Media Group. In the future he would like the opportunity to work with commissioners from other illustration fields and finds the potential of illustrating book jackets and beer cans particularly exciting.
