My name is Geffen Refaeli (b.1984), I am an illustrator, writer and visual storyteller based in Tel Aviv and London.
I studied visual communication at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem (B.Des, 2010), and have recently graduated from the Royal College of Art, London, in the Fine Arts and Humanities Pathway (M.Res, 2020).
In the past 10 years I have worked as an independent illustrator for various branding and design studios, magazines and book publishers, published several books of my own and presented my work in group and solo exhibitions in Israel and Europe. Since 2012 I have also created the @Dailydoodlegram project- an ongoing, instagram-based illustration project, which gained wide media coverage and a following of 90k and was presented in various exhibitions worldwide.
My work often engages with subjects of identity, memory and subjectivity, and focuses on the representation of characters, relationships and states of mind.
To do so, inspired by the children’s literature I have loved since childhood, I try to use humor to deal with difficult or sensitive subjects like loneliness, change and nostalgia. Through my work as an illustrator I aspire to connect to my readers by sharing the ambivalent existence of joy and sadness, hardship and laughter, that I believe are in the heart of being alive. Being able to share these experiences through art is what I find most exciting.
