My name is Dmitry Ligay. I was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1986. In 2003, I entered the Tashkent Institute of Architecture and Construction, the Faculty of Design. I’ve enjoyed drawing from an early age, but my first formal art education was only in college. While still a student, I started making illustrations and collaborated with small local publications. By the time I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2007, I had already been seriously engaged in graphics. In retrospect, I believe this period has formed my fundamental principles, and by this I mean not only my working for commercial illustration, but also the artistic path I chose. These all lead to the start of my collaboration with Moscow based Bang! Bang! Studio in 2009, with whom we subsequently completed many interesting projects.
In my illustration work I use different materials and tools—watercolor, pencil, acrylics, brushes and Photoshop, I often work in a collage technique. I like looking for new approaches, experimenting with materials, texture, technique. As an artist, I adhere to the classical manual artistic techniques, but in a modern context. Never going completely digital and working by hand, I strive to convey in the artworks the energy and nature of the physical material.
