Celyn started his career as an animator and motion director. After graduating from Central St. Martins Celyn worked on the award winning BBC2 satire Monkey Dust. He created press artwork and directed commercials for Honda as part of an iconic rebranding by Wieden+ Kennedy. His time as an animator has infused his work with dynamism, energy and sharp compositional smarts. Celyn?s work is diverse and constantly evolving but he always returns to the enthralling craft of hand drawn art on paper. “A living sketchbook,”is how Celyn refers to his approach to drawing. “Sketchbook work, doodles and illustration should never be completely separate pursuits”. Celyn strives to capture the freedom of his spontaneous imagination in a seductive clear-line, imbuing his designs with a beautiful flow. Celyn?s images are alive with ideas and colour. One of Celyn?s favourite jobs was designing artwork for Ninja Tunes Records. The project was for Luke Vibert?s (aka Wagon Christ) Too-morrow LP. Celyn designed all of the artwork for Wagon Christ’s LP’s and CD?s. The merchandise was lovingly hand-drawn by his own pencil, including advertising, posters and stickers. He also directed the accompanying 3 minute animated extravaganza for the track Chunkothy. He had free reign to really go wild. Celyn found himself hooked on the acidic looking CMYK palette, something clearly reflected in Luke?s music. Celyn translated, as closely as possible, the feel and design of the record sleeve in motion. The video is animated in Photoshop in CMYK. There isn?t a totally serious reason for designing a CMYK print-ready animation, but it gave Celyn a way of working that was different, a way of drawing inspiration in both directions, from print to animation and back again. “Choosing colours in the standard RGB for film can be overwhelming. You have too much choice.” The restricted CMYK palette helped unify much of the freewheeling, kaleidoscopic chaos that ensues. Celyn is proud to say that you could print the final 4K movie on paper and it would look as good as the LP cover.Celyn?s clients have included Kew Gardens, World Wildlife Fund, MIT, New York Times, Honda, Toyota, Guardian Newspaper, New Yorker, Financial Times, Dow Jones, Fortune Magazine, Waitrose, Le Monde, Adidas, Coca-Cola, British Airways and many more. Celyn has designed scarves and fabrics, most recently for Lush Cosmetics. He has directed a short film for Vitra/Barber Osgerby called the Map Table. Celyn has worked with many world class agencies including Mother, Saatchi & Saatchi, Bartle Bogle and Hegarty, Oglivy & Mather and McCann.
