Astrid Jaekel is the professional winner of the AOI World Awards 2109 in the category of Site-specific.
Having spent most of her life in rural West Cork, Ireland and urban Frankfurt, Germany, Astrid is now based in Edinburgh where she works as both a freelance Illustrator and Illustration tutor at Edinburgh College of Art. Her work is best known its atmospheric and playful use of mixed media and large-scale cut-out silhouettes, featured as temporary or permanent site-specific installations, often involving stories from local communities. Further interests lie within childrens’ and adult illustration for print as well as animation.
In-between illustration, Astrid enjoys long cycle tours around Edinburgh and in the Highlands. She loves being outdoors and foraging for things to fill her freezer and jam jars or you might also find her walking around town, aimlessly and with a sketchbook, looking for artistic inspiration and story-material, such as people in action, something decorating a window, or just a small architectural detail.
