DESCRIPTION:LUSTR is a festival of contemporary original illustration in Prague and the largest illustration exhibition in the Czech Republic. \nLUSTR isn’t just pictures on the walls – it is diverse installations by more than 100 selected artists\, as well as workshops\, talks/lectures\, educational activities\, music and drinks. The festival is a unique chance for the artists to meet each other\, and share their experiences and skills in a fun environment. \nSo what has LUSTR prepared for you in the 2025 edition? \nFor this year’s LUSTR program\, we’ve selected themes and personalities that cannot be overlooked in today’s zeitgeist. The main exhibition explores contemporary forms of sensitivity\, fragility\, and intimacy in illustration and comics. While the world accelerates and increasingly values efficiency\, decisiveness\, and other measurable indicators of productivity\, the artists featured in New Forms of Fragility offer something entirely different: better self-understanding\, a sense of belonging\, and radical honesty with oneself. Some of the featured artists include Tara Booth\, María Medem\, Raman Djafari\, Eric Schwarz\, Malwine Stauss\, and Melek Zertal. \nExpre the full programme and find out how to visit here.

SUMMARY:Pictograms - Iconic Japanese Designs
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition demonstrates how the beauty and precision of Japanese design has shaped the art of visual communication. \nPictograms are everywhere. From street signs and text messages to toilet doors and maps\, they have transformed global travel\, removing barriers by creating a universal visual language. \nJapan has played an integral role in the development of pictograms. The renowned design agency Nippon Design Center set an early standard with the sporting pictograms they created for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games\, while people often unknowingly use a Japanese word – ‘emoji’ – to talk about digital pictograms. \nFrom ancient Egyptian tomb carvings to navigating contemporary Japan\, Pictograms traces the design\, evolution\, power and future potential of these universal signs. \nVisitors can create their own unique symbol from a selection of component pieces and move amongst giant pictograms – standing under a 2.5-metre torii shrine gate\, sizing up to a sumo wrestler or even taking the controls of a Japanese train. \nThe exhibition also offers the first chance to see selected pictograms designed by young people from the UK\, who were invited to represent ‘their London’ in graphic form. \nVisit Japan House London for a masterclass in the simplicity of communicating without words. \nJapan House London’s Pictograms exhibition is supported by Epson UK Ltd\, NTT Data Inc Group and Yamaha Music Europe GmbH. \nFREE – Booking recommended \nTo book or to find out more visit website or click here

SUMMARY:NOMAD: Perspectives on Home in a Changing Japan
DESCRIPTION:67 York Street Gallery is proud to present a new solo exhibition by illustrator Molly Maine. \nThis thought-provoking exhibition explores the concept of “home” within the context of contemporary Japan\, juxtaposing the transient lives of digital nomads with the country’s deep-rooted traditions. \nRecently ranked the world’s fastest-growing remote working hub\, Japan has introduced a digital nomad visa to attract remote workers and support local economies amid a declining\, ageing\npopulation. At the same time\, a new generation of Japanese people isvmoving beyond their hometowns\, significant in a society where generational ties to place have long been central. For others\, like evacuees from the Noto earthquake\, leaving home is not a choice but a necessity. \nA digital nomad for the past nine years\, Maine brings a personal lens to the exhibition. The series of illustrations was developed following her 2024 artist residency in Kanazawa\, during which she visited the earthquake-stricken Noto Peninsula. Her time in Japan\, along with interviews conducted during the residency\, directly informed the creation of the work\, which draws inspiration from the stories she encountered. \nFind more information and how to visit here. \n \nIllustration by Molly Maine.

SUMMARY:Robin Chevalier A Drawing Life - beards\, bicycles & sausages
DESCRIPTION:Robin Chevalier loved drawing. He loved drawing so much that he could hardly stop drawing and he was pretty brilliant at drawing and painting and graphic design and photography and printmaking and cycling and sailing and cooking! You could probably safely say Robin was a creative polymath. \nHis work is characterised by lines. Drawn lines\, printed lines\, painted lines and masterful use of a limited but brilliantly applied colour palette. \nRobin’s compositions are simple yet complex\, with a great use of wit and subtle humour. They are quite often almost mathematical in terms of draughtsmanship but always very human. His characters seem to hark back to a golden age and yet the compositions are packed with contemporary detail and a celebration of life\, machines\, landscapes and wry humour. There’s a great knowledge and love of fine art\, illustration and design that infuses Robin’s work\, coupled with a love of beards\, bicycles and sausages. \nThis retrospective exhibition celebrating the work of Robin Chevalier (1956-2024) has been curated by Neil Hadfield and Phil Healey.
