Yo Illo: Paul Shipper and Timba Smits

September 3 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Paul Shipper and Timba Smits

Yo Illo Talks is back!  This September, we have partnered with the AOI and The Printspace, to revive our hugely popular series of inspiring illustration talks.

WHO’S SPEAKING?

Every second month, we’re delighted to be hosting two speakers. We launch on September 3rd with two incredible talents, Paul Shipper and Timba Smits.

Paul Shipper is a freelance illustrator best known for creating illustrated key art for the entertainment industry, cover art for magazines, books and music albums, and illustrated motion picture studio campaigns including work for Marvel and Star Wars. Paul draws inspiration from the illustrated film posters of the golden age, including masters Drew Struzan, Richard Amsel and Bob Peak. He has embraced digital painting along with his traditional art background utilising the latest tools and delivery methods whilst staying true to the aesthetic he loves.

Timba Smits is a curious, multi-disciplinary graphic artist. His work – often characterised by nostalgia and childhood memories – spans across analog and digital mediums and combines a recognisable blend of illustration, typography, satirical humour and pop-cultural references.

To many people in London, Timba is best known for his work in magazines; he was formerly creative director and lead illustrator of iconic indie magazines Little White Lies and Huck.

After a decade of making magazines, Timba shifted his focus (fully) towards his core passion in graphic art and illustration. He now divides his time between his own studio work and collaborations with well-known brands including Apple, AirBnB, Canon, Playboy, ESPN, Miller Lite, and Johnny Cupcakes.

WHAT’S YO ILLO?

Yo Illo is a community organisation, started in 2010 as a way to help get illustrators away from their desks and to meet each other in the real world through regular illustrators’ meetups and talking events (Yo Illo Talks).

In 2019 we announced a partnership with the Association of Illustrators (AOI), the trade association for illustration, and through this relationship we’ve been able to provide a more sustainable events programme, including the relaunch of Yo Illo Talks.

In order to be able to provide these talks for free, we are delighted to be sponsored and hosted by The Print Space, whose generosity allows us to build a diverse and inclusive community.

Space is limited so please RSVP here.

A FREE EVENT FOR ALL ILLUSTRATORS!

We want to support the illustration community and this free event is open to all illustrators— whether you’re a professional, a student or keen enthusiast — as well as art directors, designers, fine artists, typographers, textile designers or anyone who wants to get more involved in the illustration scene. We’re a friendly bunch, and we always love meeting new people, so feel free to come along — even if you’re by yourself and you don’t know anybody, we’ll make you feel welcome!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED?

Tickets for our Yo Illo Talks event will be available through Eventbrite. We anticipate a lot of interest in the event, and we’re limited by numbers so please be quick to reserve your space.

Ticket release will be announced via Yo Illo, AOI and Printspace newsletters and social media.

Anyone interested in getting involved as a volunteer or speaker should contact [email protected]
