Rhythm & Reaction: The Age of Jazz in Britain

January 27 - April 22

Night, 1926 (oil on canvas) by Dugdale, Thomas Cantrell (1880-1952); 63.3×76 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; English, in copyright

Jazz provoked reactions ranging from devotion to abhorrence when the idea, and then the music, first entered the consciousness of the British public in the aftermath of the First World War.

This great exhibition includes paintings, prints, cartoons, textiles, ceramics, films, instruments and the all-important sound, which reveal the extraordinary effect that jazz had on British society.
