Online Masterclass: How to Draw Trans and Non-Binary Characters

March 5 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Learn how to draw trans and non-binary characters in a respectful way at this masterclass with trans artist Julian Gray.

For illustrators who want to portray a diverse range of people, the ability to draw trans and non-binary characters in a non-stereotypical way is essential.

This masterclass is aimed at artists of any gender and no prior knowledge required. With guidance and feedback from an expert tutor, you will examine your own subconscious biases, learn crucial concepts and draw your own characters by following practical tips.

The fear of “getting things wrong” can make exploring ways to create trans and non-binary characters intimidating. This class will offer a safe space to learn and make mistakes without judgement, with the goal of developing your practice. Illustrators working in any media, whether digital or analogue, are welcome

What you’ll do

  • Learn what makes a ‘trans-coded’ character.
  • Look at examples of trans-positive and transphobic portrayals.
  • Engage in creative exercises to examine your own subconscious biases in a non-judgemental space.
  • Learn practical tips for drawing trans men, trans women and non-binary characters.
  • Draw your own trans and/or non-binary characters by following guidance.
  • Receive support and feedback from tutor Julian Gray

Experience needed

Some prior experience of drawing figures and characters is needed.
