March 21 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Illustrator Maisy Summer would like to invite you all to my publication launch on Thursday 21st March. It’s a publication celebrating the illustrators, writers, graphic designers, photographers, designers that make Magma what is is!
During the last two years her practice has focused on the illustrating, documenting and collating stories of independent venues: the people, places, histories, & their narratives. This began with the documentation of the renowned Manchester Northern Quarter’s Night and Day café. Through ongoing observational drawing plus interviews with the owner and promoter of the venue, she translated the history and voices into an illustrated publication, laser-cut characters, series of prints and a mural.
Situated right next to ‘Night and Day’ is Magma, stocking one of the best selections of independently published books/publications/zines. The work made here over the last six months has been a labour of love culminating in the publication you are reading now: Magma-Zine (Issue One). Produced through illustrations, interviews, stories – and the collation of all these into one product. Through this project, Maisy took the opportunity to push a creative fascination she has with the pastiche. Drawing from other creatives’ work, playful, fun and a bit cheeky in style – creating a new interesting dialogue between the original and imitation. Ultimately in a big celebration and admiration of their work, with of course a focus on the wonderful Magma itself.
The ‘Magma-Zine’ is a collation and curation of reportage illustration and interviews from a variety of different creators. Such as: Counterpoint, James Unsworth, Zine Tent, Fernandes Makes, Logo Archive, Ryan Humphrey, Dive, Beth S. Wilkinson, Tasha Sportelli, Jake Waller, Siege Mag, Martin Wilson (Rare Mags) and Terrible People.
