2024 | Longlist + Shortlist | Children's Publishing
  • Why did you create this work?
Karin and the dark is poetic and melodic about children's great imagination. The book turns away from the dark as something scary for children, and encourages wonder without dwelling so much on finding answers. I wanted to use the contrast between light and dark in the visual universe, and to make Karin like a little light in the story: Her hair is very thin and electric, and almost like a halo.
  • How were your illustrations used?
These illustrations were used in the picturebook Karin and the dark, published by Gyldendal: gyldendal.no/barneboeker/3-6-aar/karin-og-morket/p-10034154-no/
  • What materials and techniques did you use?
The illustrations were made using a combination of digital and analog tools. I used charcoal, pencil and Panpastel combined with, and finished in Procreate/Photoshop. I wanted to use the contrast between light and dark in the illustrations, and some places your eyes need to get adjusted to the dark before you can see all the details in the darkest illustrations.
