2023 | Longlist + Shortlist | Exploration

Preferred Pronoun?
He/Him

Why did you choose to enter this work?
A huge part of my work consists of self-initiated pieces and the WIA Exploration category is a great opportunity to give the personal part of one's practice recognition.

What’s your favourite thing about your shortlisted project?
The way it blends the representational and imagined qualities of a place.

What excites you most about being shortlisted?
The visibility that comes with it and seeing my work in the context of what the illustration community made this year.

Where do you usually work?
I have a desk in a shared studio space under a railway arch in South London, near Brixton. Trains run overhead every now and then but honestly we don’t hear them anymore.

How long did it take to complete your project?
About a month, on and off. A huge part of my work comes from exploring the built environment, and if a place inspires me I like to visit it on a few occasions for documentation.

What is your dream commission?
Creating a series based on public infrastructure. For example, characters inspired by London’s main train stations… that would be great.

What’s your favourite thing to draw?
I don’t think I have a favourite. Variety keeps things fresh and interesting.

What is your best tip for other illustrators?
Try to understand your needs and what works for you. Art is a very personal thing and I think it’s good to take all the time you need to explore and learn about yourself. Put it out there though!

What are your plans for the future?
Creating characters based on the architecture of other cities as well as London, nationwide and abroad. There are too many great buildings out there.
