Bo Yoon
Where the Moon Tokki Are

Exploration

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Bran Hill, creator of Tokki Soju, a traditional Korean alcohol made with rice founded in Brooklyn, wanted an art piece that embodied brand’s identity with originality. Bran was inspired by the Korean tale Ok Tokki where rabbits make rice cake on a moon. As a Korean who spent third of her life abroad, this was a great opportunity to explore my own culture and portray them with a modern twist.

How was the illustration used:
This piece was intended to be printed and framed on a wall. It was also used on social media for promotion of Tokki Soju's event.

How did you make this work:
Like how 7 is a lucky number, in Korea we consider 3 a very good number. This led me to create a three tier layout with key figures (the moon, the rabbit, and soju bottle etc) paired into groups of three. As a reference to the Ok Tokki tale, I included a traditional mill where you grind all the bad thoughts and memories, turn them into dust and blow away.
