Ilu Ros
Federico

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I was commisioned by the publisher to write and illustrate a book about life and work of Federico García Lorca, one of the most beloved poets and playwriters from Spain who was executed during the Spanish Civil War accused for his socialist views and his homosexuality. I explored how illustrations can collaborate with his poetic imagery and the delight his presence evoked to those who knew him.

How was the illustration used:
“Federico” is a 352 pages book. This generous space enabled me to elaborate the illustrations thoroughly developing a visual narrative beyond the words. The book is fully illustrated.

How did you make this work:
The illustrations from “Federico” are mostly figurative, I combined the narrative drawings with the use of visual metaphors of García Lorca’s work to build the bittersweet atmosphere the reader feels after immersing in his poems, plays and knowing about his life. The illustrations are created using watercolours, colour pencils, graphite, ink and sometimes digital collage.
