Laura Merz
Flight mural in Hanko, Finland

Site Specific

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
I created this mural to brighten up the urban landscape of Hanko, a coastal town in Finland famous for sailing, surfing and bird watching. The Hanko peninsula is one of the most frequented flyways for migratory birds. My mural is inspired by the flocks of birds flying over Hanko, and the colour scheme reflects the sails you can see on Hanko's beaches in the summer.

How was the illustration used:
The work was used as a mural commissioned by Hanko City.

How did you make this work:
The idea of the mural is to look like an abstract colour composition from close up, but when observed from farther the flock of birds appears. I wanted the painting to convey the feeling of freedom, adventures and longing I associate with seaside towns. The mural’s colour palette brightens up the grey surroundings, echoing the brightly-coloured surf boards and sails on Hanko’s beaches.
