Why did you make this work:
Formerly known as ‘Bread, Buns and Biscuits’; the title of my Final Masters project on my Children’s Book Illustration MA. It grew out of my interest in my town’s fishing heritage and my own family history. I entered it into the Templar Illustration Prize in 2019 – the theme being ‘where I come from’ – and was delighted when it won. Since then, I’ve developed it with a designed, and editor.

How was the illustration used:
Interior and cover artwork for a 32pp picture book.

How did you make this work:
I drew from observation of abandoned village, old photographs and interviewing people who lived there. I visited a scale model at the local heritage centre, remade it, and sketched it in various positions and lighting. The illustrations were made using pencil and ink wash. A palette of blue-grey came naturally to me, living on the Suffolk coast, and the use of a warm background adds a nostalgia.

Biography:
I grew up and live by the sea, in Lowestoft on the Suffolk Coast. After attending University and with a Design Degree under my belt, I continued with my own work and combined this with part-time lecturing in Drawing and Printmaking. I graduated with distinction from the Children’s Book Illustration MA at Cambridge in 2018. This book will come out in May 2022.
