Margarita Louka
Oblivion

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This work was made for my Masters course. I chose to illustrate Alice Munro’s short story, ‘The Bear Came Over The Mountain’. I was drawn to this text as I am interested in the subject of memory. This story is about a woman developing dementia and it is told from the perspective of her husband. The purpose of the unit was to explore different image and text relationships.

How was the illustration used:
These illustrations were placed alongside the text in ‘The Bear Came Over The Mountain’ as internal book illustrations. One illustration was used as a cover page.

How did you make this work:
I collected items that made me think of fragmented memory, such as torn pieces of paper. I also handwrote parts of the story and wrote on sticky notes, as one does when they start losing their memory. I then scanned them and started digitally collaging them. I wanted my images and text to feel haphazard. This project is pivotal, since it is the first time I’ve worked with abstract digital collage.
