Annabel Wright
Sonic Youth/The Pastels play the New York Dolls

Design Product & Packaging

Why did you make this work:
For the sleeve of a record bringing together two cover versions of New York Dolls songs, one by Sonic Youth from 1992 and one by The Pastels from 1987 (which, as a member, I played on). The artwork had to reflect the personalities of all three bands in one homage-genious package (!)

How was the illustration used:
As a record sleeve for a 7” split single, which ended up topping the UK official vinyl singles chart in November 2021.

How did you make this work:
I made information drawings from watching videos of the New York Dolls. I used them as reference and painted lots of versions to get the right energy and composition. I wanted something indirect, not just about the New York Dolls but also about us looking back at them through time with 2021 perspective. I took bits from several artworks and combined them digitally for the final image.
