Herbarium

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
Herbarium mural was commissioned by Glasshouse Helsinki and Lokal Gallery for their Helsinki headquarters in a protected building. The commissioner gave free hand to create a mural that is in line with their values. My goal was to create a silent celebration of diversity with the mural. To invite people to a meadow of many kinds, and raise awareness of the rapid extinctions of nature around us.

How was the illustration used:
The mural is a permanent artwork in the first floor of the commissioners’ headquarters, that is at the same time a shop and gallery space too with focus on design and sustainability.

How did you make this work:
For the 7m side and 3,5m high area I created a Herbarium. The collection of imaginary and real plants, consists of 57 plants from which 20 are endangered or already extinct plants in Finland. My process was free hand painting, straight onto the wall, marking only the areas of larger plants by tape, without projecting any plans on the wall.
