Hilary Clarcq
The Commuter, for The Folio Society's edition of "The Complete Short Stories" by Philip K. Dick

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The work fulfills a brief to illustrate "The Commuter” by Philip K Dick. I chose a scene where a man exits a train at an undesignated stop and proceeds into an empty field, eventually vanishing. The "daily grind" can eat up our days, making us wonder, "What happened to the other futures I'd once imagined for myself?" I wanted to hint at the existential themes that Dick’s stories often explore.

How was the illustration used:
The illustration accompanies a short story called "The Commuter," for The Folio Society’s four-volume, limited edition of “The Complete Short Stories” by Philip K. Dick.

How did you make this work:
The work is an oil painting on panel, which was photographed and has minor digital revisions.
