The work fulfills a brief to illustrate "The Commuter” by Philip K Dick. I chose a scene where a man exits a train at an undesignated stop and proceeds into an empty field, eventually vanishing. The "daily grind" can eat up our days, making us wonder, "What happened to the other futures I'd once imagined for myself?" I wanted to hint at the existential themes that Dick’s stories often explore.
How was the illustration used: The illustration accompanies a short story called "The Commuter," for The Folio Society’s four-volume, limited edition of “The Complete Short Stories” by Philip K. Dick.
How did you make this work: The work is an oil painting on panel, which was photographed and has minor digital revisions.

Biography:
Hilary Clarcq is an illustrator and gallery artist. Her oil paintings often favor symbolism over literal narrative, and they tend to have a surreal quality. Her work has been recognized by Spectrum Fantastic Art, Illustration West, and Infected by Art. She was the recipient of the Muddy Colors Rising Stars Award in 2019 and the Jack Gaughan Award for Best Emerging Artist in 2021.
