Why did you make this work:
1|1 is a visual essay about a girl who has a mirror on her face. She has failed to get back to who she really is because of social recognitions and self-expectations that were put upon her. The character is a reflection of myself, an extreme people-pleaser. One day I realized that I was not only wearing masks to increase chances of making people like me but also losing my identity in the process.

How was the illustration used:
The series belongs to my thesis series. I completed it during my last year at SVA MFA Illustration program.

How did you make this work:
I did the line drawing of these works by hand using a dip pen and colored these drawings digitally.

Biography:
Flora Bai is an illustrator and visual artist originally from Wuhan, currently based in NYC. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts, MFA Illustration as Visual Essay program in 2021. Her work is recognized by 3x3 Magazine, American Illustration (AI-AP), Communication Arts, Creative Quarterly, Penguin Random House, and the Rockefeller Center. She has a bunny named Judy, and a dog named Zima.
