Why did you make this work:
This is an ongoing personal project through which I want to honour BIPOC women who inspire me. This part of the series focuses on writers.

How was the illustration used:
The illustrations have been shared on social media for the community and some are available as prints.

How did you make this work:
I work with watercolour and vectors and since the beginning of my practice I have been striving to merge the two techniques, which is what I've done here. The inspiration comes from patchwork, quilting and collage.

Biography:
Hélène Baum-Owoyele is an afropean illustrator living in Berlin. Her artworks have been used in various contexts, from editorial pieces and children’s books to social action with clients such as The New York Times, Tate Publishing, Vox and EOTO to name a few. Coming from a diverse cultural background, what defines her universe is a sense of “collage” and "kaleidoscopic identity".
