Valentyna Kuzmyk
The Pursuit

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
The illustrations where made while I was reading the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville, since it had on me a huge impact. I wanted to put on paper the exceptional settings and scenes, as it appeared in my mind. This series depicts the Captain Ahab, the Spouter-Inn with its arched bone of the whale's jaw, harnessed whales escaping Pequod, a Pulpit in a Nantucket's church and the rusty Goney ship.

How was the illustration used:
The intended use of the work is a series of book illustrations or posters as well.

How did you make this work:
The original drawings were done entirely in graphite pencils, white charcoal and gouache, then scanned and slightly digitally edited. The steel blue background links to the prepared paper diffused in Venice in the XV Century and to the antique nautical maps. The images show almost an analytical approach, mirroring author's scrupulous descriptions. The size is 25x35 cm each.
