New TalentWhy did you make this work:
This project is based on a favourite fairytale by George MacDonald, which was originally collected as a novel. I challenged myself to take the most intriguing scenes and dialogue and convert them into a picture book sequence. MacDonald's bicentennial is approaching, and I intend this to be a visual celebration of the tale's overall spirit, as a gateway for children to rediscover the story.
How was the illustration used: This is intended as a children's picture book, either as a standalone work or as a companion to the novel from which it was adapted.
How did you make this work: I began with a tonal drawing in graphite and then layered large, loose washes of digital colour on top. I then defined my forms by digitally erasing and "scraping" away at the colour layers which produce more spontaneous textures and edges. I felt this layered with the more controlled graphite helped complement the North Wind character, who is meant to be a benevolent yet wild entity.

Biography:
Emilie Gill is an author-illustrator currently based in the United Kingdom. She recently completed her MA in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art. She grew up in Kentucky, drawing mostly nonexistent creatures and worlds in a house which threatened to collapse beneath the weight of her ever-expanding library.
