Emilie Gill
The Face of the North Wind

Children's Publishing

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This project is based on a favourite fairytale by George MacDonald, which was originally collected as a novel. I challenged myself to take the most intriguing scenes and dialogue and convert them into a picture book sequence. MacDonald's bicentennial is approaching, and I intend this to be a visual celebration of the tale's overall spirit, as a gateway for children to rediscover the story.

How was the illustration used:
This is intended as a children's picture book, either as a standalone work or as a companion to the novel from which it was adapted.

How did you make this work:
I began with a tonal drawing in graphite and then layered large, loose washes of digital colour on top. I then defined my forms by digitally erasing and "scraping" away at the colour layers which produce more spontaneous textures and edges. I felt this layered with the more controlled graphite helped complement the North Wind character, who is meant to be a benevolent yet wild entity.
