Why did you make this work:
Suffolk Libraries commissioned me to draw one day a month, in thirteen of their libraries, over the course of a year, capturing the unseen moments of library users and staff. I was then asked to create a set of original prints, using my drawings as inspiration. With the concertina book my aim was to create a visual narrative that documents the year and celebrates the services of Suffolk Libraries.

How was the illustration used:
The illustrations are a record of a period of time, presented as a concertina book and limited edition prints, for exhibition at Ipswich library. During the project we went into lockdown, because of Covid-19, and the exhibition moved online. The exhibition in the library will hopefully now take place in October 2021. The illustrations will also be used by Suffolk Libraries for marketing purposes.

How did you make this work:
I made around 200 drawings which I used as reference to create block print illustrations. I hand-carved over 80 blocks to create a hand-made, hand-printed concertina book. I incorporated traditional library imagery, such as date stamps and index card pockets. Text was hand-stamped using tiny rubber blocks. I hand-printed book cloth and used traditional bookbinding techniques to make the covers.

Biography:
Sandy Horsley is an illustrator and printmaker based in Suffolk, UK. She has an illustration BA from NUA and an MA in Children's Book Illustration from Cambridge School of Art. In 2019 she received a Diploma Award at the Moscow International Book Fair and her debut picture book was published in 2020. Sandy loves the unpredictability of printmaking and likes nothing better than inky fingernails.
