Abi Deniz
La Peste Illustrated

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
My class was assigned to each illustrate three color spreads and ten grayscale spot illustrations for a book of our choosing, and this is one work of mine from that project. I chose Camus' La Peste, not only because of its relevance to current events, but also its importance to me as the book that introduced me to the study of philosophy back in high school.

How was the illustration used:
It is theoretically intended to be included in some sort of special edition printing of La Peste. It could be accompanied by the two other spreads I completed for this project, with the additional black-and-white splash illustrations integrated throughout the text.

How did you make this work:
First, I re-read the book and took notes! This illustration went through dozens of different ideations which were critiqued by my long-suffering roommates. The final image was painted in Procreate and Photoshop. I integrated my own handmade ink textures into original digital brushes and overlaid scans of ink washes on top of my painting.
