Why did you make this work:
“This is my first day out after isolating for four weeks and when I saw you painting with all those bright colours it has really cheered me up. Thanks!” — A Passer-By. This sums up “why?”. As negative news overwhelms our day to day lives, and the emotional and physical toll of regulations take hold, we need a spark of hope! Times like these encourage us to look towards our communities for support.

How was the illustration used:
The work brings art to everyday life by painting dull media boxes with colourful designs celebrating the vibrant local community. Street art removes barriers by showcasing art and creativity in a way that is immediately accessible to everyone. It can transform our local spaces into cultural assets. This was part of a community initiative to paint a trail of boxes across Meanwood, Leeds.

How did you make this work:
Each element of the design has been directly inspired by the local area. Shapes and patterns were taken from windows and house gates near the media box and the characters are based on local people I drew on location. It was painted by hand over four days. That in itself was a great experience as people came up and chatted, sharing their thoughts and stories with me.

Biography:
Ekaterina Sheath is a BA Illustration student at Leeds Arts University. She sees illustration as a way to celebrate hidden stories and encourage engagement with local history. She works with social organisations and community projects to produce illustrations that are engaging, colourful and educational. A core value in Ekaterina’s work is representation: celebrating diversity and equality.
