YinXin He
Steppenwolf - Hermann Hesse

Un-commissioned | New Talent

Why did you make this work:
This is my Bachelor Project in winter semester 2020-2021. I chose to illustrate Steppenwolf for my Bachelor thesis as a dedication for one of my favourite authors: Hermann Hesse. I tried to capture the protagonist's feelings/perception at certain moments in the book, instead of the acts.

How was the illustration used:
The book is meant to be a hard cover with thread stitching, on the back cover the top hat is shown upside down with wolf ears sticking out of it, regarding the 'magic' theatre. The illustrations are placed facing the text.

How did you make this work:
The illustrations are divided into two parts: the main story and the treatise of Steppenwolf. The main story includes 20 full-page illustrations, painted with acrylic color, while the treatise consists of 6 pencil drawings. All illustrations were created with metaphors/symbols in psychology or mythology. The whole point was to created the inner world of the protagonist Harry Haller.
