Why did you make this work:
This was a brief from the Washington Post Opinions to create a editorial illustration based on a poignant article about the fragility of life in the midst of the global pandemic, told through the eyes of the author and her family's fig tree. I was particularly inspired by the idea that the author was guided through dark times by the fig tree when navigating life's hardships.

How was the illustration used:
Editorial Illustration (digital and print)

How did you make this work:
The illustration was created digitally on procreate, but I wanted to use a lot of brushes that would simulate traditional materials. For instance, inky watercolour pens and acrylic brushes. However, the process was very organic, stemming from multiple loose drawings responding to the article.

Biography:
Julie Lai is an illustrator born and raised in Hong Kong. She graduated from Falmouth University in 2020 with a BA in Illustration. Drawing inspiration from urban and natural landscapes, she aims to explore the contours of spaces through an emotive lens. Fluid lines and textures are a common feature of her visual style. She loves a good cup of coffee and the occasional nap on public transport.
