When the first lockdown hit all of my freelance projects dried up for 2 months. This gave me time to experiment. This series was one of those experiments inspired by the constant news reports on corona. Politicians, scientists and the media had so much to say about covid-19 that I thought, why not give the virus it's own voice by injecting it in typographic bacteria and hear what it has to say.
How was the illustration used: The series was used on my social media and that lead them being used in the annual Future Forecast report by The Future Laboratory.
How did you make this work: I photographed petri dishes to have the setting for the illustration. I used yellow rubber kitchen gloves (that I turned blue) because I didn't want to use medical ones, because of the PPE shortage at the time. I drew out all the letters first and recreated them in illustrator, trying to design organic grown letters. Afterwards in photoshop I added textures and other elements to blend it all.

Biography:
Xavier Segers is a Belgian graphic designer and illustrator. He's also known as the The Last Dodo and is based in London. He’s been developing his fresh and playful aesthetic on a variety of commercial and personal projects. Besides working for ad agencies, he makes illustrations for interiors and the cultural sector. He's heavily inspired by the natural world and his mixed Korean heritage.
