Village Fete Prize Winner

Why did you make this work:
I was asked by the editors of ‘Counterpoint’ magazine to create an illustration around the theme of ‘Growing’ for Issue 19. I have always been fascinated by photographs from local newspapers of gardeners entering massive vegetables into village fetes, so I took this idea a little further for the illustration and created this peaceful gardener.

How was the illustration used:
The illustration was used on the facing page of the contents in Issue 19 of ‘Counterpoint’ magazine. I wanted to create an illustration which was quite light and gentle, and perhaps a little surreal, but also showed the importance of finding quiet solace in personal achievements, in this case one which depends on hope for the future.

How did you make this work:
The original drawing was done in pencil and ink, then scanned in sections, followed by minimal editing. The magazine was printed as a risograph with teal and orange inks on recycled paper.
