The Song of the Tree is a book that I chose to write, illustrate and design. I wanted to integrate a poetical text and imagery with classic book design, to carry the reader through a story that has a profound message about home, identity, attachment and the environment.
How was the illustration used: The illustrations were used to make a book that creates the wonderful experience of a physical book for children and adults to read together. Reminding us of the importance of the role that books and the power of storytelling.
How did you make this work: Illustration, design and typography add layers of intricacy which evoke the heritage of book design. Tension between text and image has been carefully considered to create a story that builds in pace. Inspired by Blake and Morris. Drawn originally in pen and ink, collaged and coloured in illustrator. Each ink is printed in an order to to create the handmade feel of screen printing.

Biography:
Coralie Bickford-Smith is a London based designer, illustrator and author. She graduated from Reading University with a degree in Typography and Graphic Communication. Now a renowned cover designer as well as the author-illustrator of The Fox and the Star (2015) – winner the Waterstones Book of the Year award 2015 – The Bird and the Worm (2017) and The Song of the Tree (2020).
