This site specific project forms part of Rollings practice based PhD which seeks to address how to co design with children in communicating the Carbon Cycle, exploring the role of the interactive visual narrative in the design of the children’s picture book at key stage 2. Secondary title: co designing ecology with children for mental wellbeing.
How was the illustration used: Designed to be a whole body experience loosely based on yoga positions enabling deeper reflection to ones place within nature and the carbon cycle by putting the reader as the object of the action the interaction aims to enable this reflection. Through using visual scientific information with a new purpose a new relationship occurs between the physical act and the reading experience.
How did you make this work: Collaborating with the Forestry Commission to design and implement a woodland life cycle trail the reader is invited to participate in physical actions resembling the trees lifecycle offering up new ways of interpreting and visualising the carbon cycle. The images are created through layers of hand painted elements digitally composed and printed to form signs leading the walker along a trail.

Biography:
Hannah Rollings is an illustrator and lecturer working across publishing and editorial illustration. Working as Associate BA Illustration Lecturer at Southampton Solent University, previously visiting lecturer at UCA Farnham, Norwich and University of Brighton. Currently undertaking her PhD at Kingston University supported by AHRC LDoC funding.Represented by How Do You Do Illustration Agency, Hannah graduated in 2013 with a Masters Degree from the University of Brighton in Sequential Design and Illustration, previously graduating from Kingston University in 2007 with a BA in Illustration and Animation. Awards include being Shortlisted AOI World Illustration Awards 2018 'Book Category' and shortlisted for the V&A Book Award, Emerging Illustrator at the Cheltenham Illustration Awards and a D&AD Best New Blood.www.hannahrollings.com
