Juan Esteban Rodríguez
True Grit

Commissioned | Professional

Why did you make this work:
The Folio Society commissioned me to illustrate Charles Portis' True Grit, which follows 14-year-old Mattie Ross. Hell-bent on avenging her murdered father and unable to pull in the fugitive killer on her own, she asks around town for the meanest gun for hire... I was truly motivated to depict those vast landscapes, ruthless bandits and the strength and bravery of this book's main characters.

How was the illustration used:
I created the binding illustration, slipcase and 6 interior illustrations for this book, which is bound in cloth and contained in a slipcase with gold metallic ink.

How did you make this work:
Despite having a clear touch of traditional ink and washes, these illustrations were made entirely digitally. I tried to keep this essence by using some rough and textured digital brushes and somehow, rescuing the style of great American Golden Age illustrators such as N.C. Wyeth, Bernie Fuchs or Albert Dorne.
